You can always help us

On Spec would not be able to publish new fiction and poetry without the support of our Cultural Industries grants from the Alberta Media Fund, Alberta Ministry of Arts, Culture and Status of Women. If we were to charge our subscribers the true cost of production, the price of a copy would be out of reach for most readers.

This is the time of year when our grant application has been submitted, and we wait to learn the jury’s decision. Will we get enough to produce  the magazine in 2025?  This will often depend on government’s changing attitude toward the arts, the available budget, the number of eligible applicants, and even on the tastes of the juries of any particular  year. We have been grateful for the ongoing support, but it’s not always a given. We can’t be complacent.

We also depend on, and appreciate ongoing monthly and annual support from our generous donors.  You can join them by making a small monthly donation–even the price of a cup of tea or coffee will help to sustain us, especially in the face of increasing costs of production and declining revenues from all sources.

On Spec has been a labour of love for a revolving core group of dedicated creative people over the years. We don’t take a salary from this, but there are always costs for production, distribution and marketing.

  • We pay our writers and artists, designer, and printer.
  • We pay the ever-increasing costs of mailing copies ,and the mailing service that prepares copies for distribution. (You thought we did the shrink-wrapping in the kitchen?)
  • We pay for insurance, bookkeeping and accounting services.
  • We pay for memberships in national and provincial organizations for magazines.
  • We pay costs of marketing and promotion to other groups such as Science Fiction and Fantasy conventions and writers’ conferences. This can include the costs of renting a dealer table at a convention, even though the volunteer doing this is frequently paying their own costs of travel and accommodation.
  • We pay for our online presence, as well as office equipment as needed.

Just imagine if we were to add salaries and wages for our editorial staff to this!

If you are subscribing to this blog, but not yet subscribing to On Spec, maybe you can buy a single copy on our Ko-fi page. While you read this, perhaps you can think of a friend or family member who could use a subscription to On Spec for a gift. Maybe you have a lot of followers on your social media, and the mere mention of On Spec with a link could bring some of them to our web page for a look. There are many ways you can help us, and the time is always now!  And we thank you for your help.

While you are at it, you could write  letters  to your elected representatives and let them know how important it is for government to continue supporting the arts in Canada.

When Words Collide 2024

This weekend is the  annual WHEN WORDS COLLIDE convention for genre writers and readers (Science Fiction & Fantasy, Romance and Mystery/Suspense), taking place at Calgary’s Delta South Hotel. The membership was capped quite a while ago, which gives you a clue about the convention’s reach and popularity.

Copies of On Spec will be available for sale at the Tyche Books table in the Merchants room (our thanks to Margaret Curelas for this), and the Vendor room is the only part of the convention that’s open to the public. Filled with book publishers and authors, it’s a great place to stock up on your home library.

Some of the On Spec editors are participating in programming during the weekend. If you’re there, be sure to stop us for a chat!

Well, we didn’t win an Aurora this year, but wow, what a field!

Congratulations to Stephen Kotowych for his debut anthology of The Year’s Best Canadian Fantasy and Science Fiction Volume I! We were pretty chuffed to have work from On Spec selected for this premiere on the Canadian SF publishing scene.  And we can’t wait for Volume 2!

The Aurora category for Best Related Work is always a fascinating blend of items that just don’t fit in any of the main categories,  and this year, the competition was tough. We were honoured to be nominated and want to thank the readers who voted for us.

Congratulations to all the winners and the nominees for this year’s awards. Support your local library and get them to order in the winning books.

Live and Learn

Hello all! It has come to our attention that our bank, which whom we’ve been dealing for thirty-five years, has decided that cheques made out to “On Spec” are not valid, while cheques made out to “On Spec Magazine” are.  Mystifying because they have accepted these cheques since we started the magazine.

Canadian customers can easily circumvent this by sending an e-transfer to onspecmagazine(at)gmail.com, with a follow up email to explain more detail of the payment, We can also happily accept payments by PayPal. Until further notice when we can sort things out, cheques should be made out to “On Spec Magazine” or to “The Copper Pig Writers’ Society”.

Now go back and enjoy your weekends.

On Spec #128

“It’s a medium-sized dog, I guess, small but not like put-me-in-a-handbag small. And the vocal cords on this thing, wow. True to life, I have to assume. I have never hated anything as passionately as I hate that dog.”

“When It Comes to the Dog”, by M. Ian Bell, is the first story in issue #128.  We’d love to get your comments on this and other stories.

And to our non-subscribers,  if you buy a digital copy of the issue from our Ko-fi shop, we add your name to a draw for a FREE two-year print subscription to On Spec.

If you are already a subscriber, and you bring us a new subscriber, we will add another issue to your current subscription, and send your friend a complimentary back issue. Just send us an email to let us know when they subscribe!

Only in Alberta

Now that it’s summer, a lot of our readers are doing…well…more reading to while away the time on the back yard lounge chair or at the beach or cabin in the woods.

We encourage you to grab an e-copy of On Spec through Weightless Books, or via our Ko-Fi donation page. We are also working on other distribution channels for On Spec in digital formats. Buying a copy from us on Ko-fi this summer will add your name to a draw for a free two-year subscription to our paper issues.

But, here’s a HUGE bonus for our followers in Alberta, Canada!  You can get On Spec issues–both current and back–in digital format to read for FREE from your regional public library! All it takes is a library card, which, we are sure you already have.

Book Reviews Update

Have you been keeping up with Lorina Stephens’ book reviews? Her analysis of these new works by Canadian SFF authors is quite honest and forthright, and you will definitely want to read books by writers she admires.  She is open about the books she didn’t enjoy, and of course your taste may vary.  Do have a look, and maybe you can choose some of your summer 2024 reading material.
